ALL BLACK TEAM. SOME CHANGES. DUNEDIN, July 12. Tu connection with the New Zealand Rugby team to tour Australia, Darrell advises his inability to make the trip. Byrne (King Country) takes his place Williams (Kaikorai Club, Dunedin) has been selected as an extra forward. The team assembles in Wellington on Tuesday. It plays Wairarapa on Wednesday, and leaves for Sydney by the Vlimaroa on Thursday. MAORIS DEFEAT N.S.W. 11. (Rec. July 12, 9.55 p.m.) SYDNEY, July 12. Maoris defeated New South Wales second rugby fifteen by 27 to IS, alter an indifferent contest, wherein intermittent flashes of brilliancy were seen. The play was inclined to be feeble and ragged in the first half, the blues frequently preferring to drop the ball like a hot potato when bustled by the All Blacks. The score at the interval was 14 to 6 in favour of the Maoris. The second spell was more evenly fought, with the Maoris in asccndncy. though both sides were failing at critical moments. The Maoris scored seven tries, three of which were converted, and the home team scored six tries. REP PLAYERS. With a view to the selection of the rep. teams in the forthcoming representative matches the West Coast selectors have chosen the following players to keep in training: — (Those who neglect to keep in form will be overlooked in the selections): —Goodall, Nightingale, Stephens, Ileaphy, Nelson, Walton. (Steel and O’Callaghan will not be available). The above names arc those of players in the Grey Division only, and any player not included who shows good form in later games may bo added to the list. SOCCER FOOTBALL. AUSTRALIA DEFEATS MANAWATU. PALMERSTON N., July 12. A Representative Association football match was played to-day between Australia and Manawatu. The weather was line but cold and the ground was soft and slippery. The visitors showed superior combination, and gave an excellent display. The homo team had a fair defence, but a weak attack. Maunder scored shortly after the commencement and the combined effort of the Australian for wards later resulted in Ward goaling. Manawatu were unable to penetrate the opposition defence, and Maunder scored a third goal, the first spell ending: Australia 3; Manawatu nil. The home team showed flashes of good play in the second spell, several shots going wide. Bratten, following up fast, scored a fourth goal, the ball rebounding from the goal keeper. After a fine solo run, Ward secured the final goal and the game ended; Aus-
tralia 5; Manawatu nil. Gibb, Fisher, and Mcßride constituted a good defence. There were 1800 present. PROPOSED ENGLISH VISIT. WELLINGTON, July 12. A conference of New Zealand and Australian football representatives discussed a visit of an English term. On behalf of Australia, Mr Storey said that they proposed it for next year to avoid the visit of (he Rugby English Eleven in 1924. He estimated the cost at £ll,OOO and New Zealand and New South Wales would be expected to find £3OOO each. The New Zealand authorities declined a pooling proposal and offered Io pay £lOOO to the Australians and take over the team at Sydney, paying all expenses from there and back. They stipulated that the team must be purely amateur am! preferred 1924. Mr Storey said that the offer was acceptable, in fact he preferred it to pool ing. He would strongly recommend its accepta nee. During the discussion, it was mentioned that the two recent test matches yielded nearly £lOOO each and the third £5OO, but most of the profits would go to those associations who guaranteed the Australian tour.
