KUMARA NOTES.
(Our Own Correspondent.) The Old People’s Home will probably be placed under new management next month, a fact which should have the early consideration of our local medical committee. In view of the number of accidents which make it necessary for the patient to be taken away to other hospitals it should be pointed out to the Board the need of reopening cither the Haddon or Blanket Ward for the purpose of having such cases treated locally. Wc have a duly qualified medical practioneer, who could treat all cases without any extra expense to the Board. Then , again there is not a maternity nurse ; (certified or otherwise) following that: profession in this district. Therefore ! the appointment of a Jst. Helen’s j Nurse tu take charge of the ward, with a probationer nurse as assistant is much needed. Mothers treated at home could be charged by the isoard for professional services rendered by it nurse. It is unreasonable for th-e people of this district to be j»ut to the expense of going to Grey or Hokitika for hospital and maternity comforts, when we have a capable doctor and a splendid hospital in our midst. Tho great injustice which is inflicted on the people of this district could easily be remedied without any extra expense by the appointment of a couple oi nurses and a wardsman. Tho Salvation Army Band while passing through town on. Saturday stopped at “the corner” and played a few lively airs. Afterwards they treated the inmates of the Old Peo- I pie’s Home to a short programme.! The novelty of a band playing was ( quite a pleasure to all local residents. I Mr Thomas Morgan of Fifth Street i has just returned from a six weeks’! holiday in the North Island. He met ■ during his travels numbers of Kumara natives and ex-residents all of whom have kindly recollections and. good wishes for the old tewn. A violent storm accompanied by wind and heavy rain passed over town on Monday, doing considerable damage to chimneys and fences. The Taramakau river rose very quickly and on Tuesday morning was in high flood. Mr Frank Mclntosh one of the workmen employed at the Tarainakau sawmilling company on the Beach Road inflicted a nasty gash in his foot with an axe on Monday afternoon. He was brought to his home in Kumara and his injuries were attended to by Dr. Daniels. He is doing as well as can be expected.
The contractors making the road to Messrs Simpson and Andrews’s farm have made good progress, having taken full advantage of the good weather to push on this most n-eeessary piece of road.
