RUNANGA 11. v. BARRYTOWN. There was a large crowd at the i Seven Mile on Saturday afternoon to watch the maiden game of League between Barry town and an improved Runanga junior team. The game resulted in a win for Barrytown by 16 points to 14 points. The weather was fine, but cold, and the ground was in fair order, though a trifle heavy. The. game was very fast and exciting. Barrytown showed superior form, and good combination generally, delighting the spectators. The showing the Runanga forwards put up was rather disappointing,, and their backs were unlucky players. The pick for Barrytown were J. Ryall, H. Hill, Price, Allen and Langridge. For Runanga, the best were Hourton, O’Neil, Scott, Anderson, and Hunter. Mr E. Smith controlled the game. WEEK-END FIXTURES. RUGBY UNION. WEEKLY MEETING. The W.C.R.U. met last evening. Present: Capt. Cox (chair), J. Guy, R. Nelson, J. Fairbairn, T. O’Donnell, J. F. Wilson, J. Heffernan, J. Dunford, C. Hcaphy, J. Rothwell, L. Armstrong, J. Beaumont, E. Perkins, W. Gicseking, and N; Jones (secretary). Motueka R.U. asked for permission to play Marlborough ahead of West Coast, for the Seddon Shield, and suggested August 19. It was decided to accede to the request. The Buller Union confirmed their desion to play at Greymouth on July 29. and suggesting’ August 12 as the day to play for the Rundle Memorial Cup at Westport. 1 The meeting decided to play on the date mentioned. It was decided to ask the Inangahua Union for a match with Grey representatives on the return of the West Coast reps. from Westport on August 13. The Westport Football Club asked for a third grade game with GrcyThe Union decided to accept the offer and to place a team under 19 years

of age in the field. Mr R. Nelson resigned as Star delegate to the Union and Mr .1. Jarden was appointed in his stead. An application from R. Meade for transfer from the Star Club to Marist was referred to the Star Club for confirmation. The appeal of the Burn Club against the decision of the Lake Brunner Subdistrict in regard to a recent match was upheld on the ground that the evidence submitted was considered matter of fact of which the referee is sole judge. The Chairman, and Messrs Perkins Wilson and Fairbairn were appointed a deputation to wait on the Trotting Club in connection with the control of Victoria Park. Members expressed the opinion that the Union should not be compelled to pay amusement tax and it was decided to circularise every Union in New Zealand asking support to a resolution io have the amusement tax removed, on foolball which was considered for the physical welfare of the community, the matter to be brought before the Government. The terms of the Inangahua SubUnion for the match against Grey on July 22, were accepted. The selection committee were authorised to select 20 or more players to train for future representative watches. A vote of congratulation was passed to Jack Steel on his selection as vieeeaptain of the All. Black team. , A vote of thanks was passed to Mr JV. Gicsekiug for preparing the pro-

Nelson’s challenge to play Marlborough on July 22nd, for the Seddon Shield, was discussed at a meeting of the Marlborough Rugby Union and, 1 after a heated discussion, it was decided, by 8 votes to 5, to offer July 29th as the date. The discussion arose through Phillips, being still with the Maori team, and C. Fitzgerald leaving shortly for Australia with the All Blacks. It is reported that King, who played

for Marlborough against Buller, returned to Wellington and has been playing for his old club, Poncke, is to plav for Nelson against Marlborough in the coming Shield, match. Svenson, Buller’s representative in the. All Black team to tour Australia, returned to Westport on Saturday. When at Wanganui he had a pleasant surprise sprung on him by members of the club to which he formerly belonged, the Imlay Club, who presented him with a handsome gentleman’s suit ease, suitably inscribed, as a mark of their good will and in appreciation of his selection, in the All Black team. BULLER SOCCER ASSOCIATION. WEEK-END MATCHES. Following were the results of the week-end matches. — Wanderers 6 goals—Athletics nil. Denniston 7 goals—Uniteds nil. The Wanderers v. Athletics game was played at Millerton in the presence of nearly 300 spectators and in ideal weather.'The Wanderers’ combination soon wore down their opponents and they ran out easy winners by six goals to nil, scored by Methven 3, i White 2, and Johnston I.
