THE LEAGUE GAME.

INTEREST IN COMPETITION GROWING. (By “Touch Line.”) Although the weather conditions "were wretched for last Saturday’s match between Waiuta and Kohinoor, there was a fair crowd of spectators present; and such was the enthusiasm shown that the majority remained in all the rain and wind to sec it out. The Waiuta team comprise the best backs in the competition; and had they a pack of forwards something similar in ability they would make a fine show. The Kohinoor team which in previous games played a draw, showed that the players have benefited by the training indulged in and by good forward play backed up by a solid defence by the backs more than held their own against their *»more speedy opponents. The game was played in a fine friendly spirit and not a single hitch occurred to mar the event. For the winners Thomas, Giffney and Gerraghly (backs) and Alahoney, Blight and Steel in the the forwards were prominent. Dando, a recent arrival from Wellington, showed to advantage in the early stages of the game and when in form should be a big acquisition to the live-eights lin-e for the green and black. Di the Waiuta team Watts fullback gave a very sound display and never at any time let his team down. C. AleElwee ■ also showed out and played one of his I best games. Charlie is the keynote :io this team. Gray at half is another back of note and his feinting tactics on Saturday made many openings. In the forwards Williams easily stood ’ out and is a fine forward, both in the , I(h\c and otherwise. Wi|cox and i Burgess were the most prominent of ’ I the others. Kohinoor’s win on Sat- ' urday places the various teams in the < | Pollard Cup as follows: —

This afternoon and to-morrow the competitions will be continued when some interesting games will be got off. At Blackball to-day the Roa juniors and Blackball juniors will try conclusions for the second round fixture, and the winner of this game is indeed hard to pick. The last time they met Blackball snatched a very narrow victory by <3 to nil; so to-day’s game might easily reverse that form. At the Rec. Rivals will meet the Kohinoor 11. team, when another good game is anticipated, as the Rival team arc noted for good football. The Kohinoor team, on th-e other hand, are coming on every match, and aro confident of ex ; tending the champions of the town. ’ The principal attraction for the week-1 end, however, is the senior game be- , tween Kunanga and Blackball to bo played at Blackball to-morrow afternoon at 3 p.m. Both these teams aro at the top of the scale iu their grade, and it will be interesting to see who emerges victorious after to-morrow’s game. The Kohinoor 3rd grade team will play Blackball at 1.30 p.m. and this is expected to bo a good even go also. | GENERAL.
