WORKERS’ SACRIFICE.
FUNERAL OF MANGAHAO VICTIMS. CHRISTCHURCH, July 7. The funeral of tho three Christchurch men who perishu 1 in Mangahao disaster: Frederick James Birss, William Charles Birss, and Phillip Graham, was hold to-day. There was a large gathering of fr ’ids and workers from Alangahao ami .Artliur’s Pass. Rev N. L. I). Webster, at the grave of Mr Birss ami his son. said they’ had lost their lives in going to rescue comrades iu danger. It was part of the sacrifii-e for the good of mankind that ligtd to lie made. Rev W. P. Hughes :;t the grave of Graham, said that industry claimed its toll victims, and, in his opinion, those who went forth on difficult and dan gerous enterprises were every bit as brave as those who went forth to war. A strong denial of the statement that Mr Maxwell had been warned not to enter the tunnel was made by some of the men who attended the funeral of the victims.
