BOXING.

FRANK GRIFFIN IN SYDNEY. | Writing from Sydney on June 23. .Trank Griffin reports having a few days'proviously resumed training operations at Les O’Donnell’s gym. “Les,” ho says, “has the most up-to-date ■ rooms in Sydney, and all the best boxers in the land train there, while there is always a crowd to watch the boxers go through their work. Larry Jones and Tommy Cello, the newly arrived Y’anks, are also training there. They seem to be both fair boxers, but I think Cello is the better of the two. He fights Godfrey and Jones lights Blackburn. They will need to be able to fight to beat those two good Australians. Blackburn fought a wonderful fight when ho boat Mcßride, Hie American boxer, a short ■while ago. . The punters were laying the odds on Mcßride. I took the odds, and came out a good winner. Jimmy Ryan and Billy Hunefield (Yank) are to battle on Saturday (July 24). Hunefield put up an awfully poor fight with Nutty Fairhall some time ago. It was said to be the worst fight that was -ever seen at the Stadium, and yet he is getting anothci fight at tho Stadium. I know Jimmy Ryan well, find have boxed with him, and I think Jimmy will win. Hunelicld is also training at Les O’Donnell’s. 1 had a good offer from Western Australia two days ago, but I ani not going over there yet. “1 will must likely come back to New Zealand in two or three months. J was very pleased to receive a letter from Mr Andy Grogan, telling mo that my d-isqualifica'ion was lifted, and of-

fering me a fight at Greyniouth. 1 have written back thanking Mr Grogan and his Association, anil I will do my best to get bark as soon as possible. My next light is at Newcastle on the 7th of July (Friday next). lam not sure who will be my opponent. L-es wrote last night to Newcastle to fix the light up. .1 refused four fights last week owing to my bad hand. 1 am doing no boxing yet. but will startnext Monday. 1 will be able to get plenty of boxing now, and that is what lam in need of. Aly hand is mending, but is nothing like its old self yet. I can punch straight with it. but my favourite punch (the left hook) I cannot use yel. Les is going to try ami get me fixed up with Tommy Uren for the middle weight championship. but. I am anxious for a return fight with Charl-ey Ring. He can’t beat me when I have two good hands, and as soon as J have a jew fights, and think my hand will stand. I am going to get after him again, even if 1 have to go to Victoria after him. lam quite entitled to a return fight, considering the showing .1 put up wh-cii I only had one hand. I will not have it that he is my master yet. For my first fight in Greymouth when 1 arrive back, 1 want the welter weight champion. I want a couple, of lights in Hie welter, and then the middle weight champion. I did not intend to light out of my class, but I think 1 would like to fight MeUleary. To attempt to win the welter, mi *lle, find heavy weights is attempting a lot, but I honestly think 1. can do that. Jim Baillie, tho big heavy weight whom 1 beat in three rounds, fought that tough and game fighter Tom O’Alalley a week ago. and beat O’Malley. Of course. I will not tight all the above fights in Greyipouth, but my first fight will be there, and perhaps my second; and I sincerely hope to see all my old supporters around the ring side once again. It will seem just like old times, only that they will see a rather different boxer to when I last appcilH rd. I have had a lot of experience over here, and that is a groat thing to have. It has been no easy matter to get it, and where I am now, at O’Donnell’s gym., is a place wlrerc I will learn a lot more, as Les is a great teacher, and a real nice fellow, an/, he is jww my manager and trainer. Well I think .1 have told you all the news at present. llojiing to see you all again before very long, and with best regards, FRANK GRIFFIN. NOTES. i There are expected to be some excellent bonis at the Greymouth Boxing Association’s coining amateur tourney. The Christ church Sports Club has decided to present the Grey mouth Boxing Association, with a cup stated to be worth £35. Some members objected, but the majority favoured the present at ion. i The chairman said that the cup was to be competed for by the Greyniouth, Westport and Hokitika centTes. 1 The chairman, (Major Row), and Mr Biltcliff were appointed a committee to draw up conditions for the cup. It was decided to hold, the CadmanMcCleary fight on August 11 or 12. It was decided to send a remit to the annual conference that the purse for any professional match should not exceed £2OO. An application from James Carr, of. Millerton, for a match was referred io the competitions' committee, to be kept steadily in view.
