RUGBY PROSPECTS. STAR AND MARIST SENIORS TO MEET. VICTORIA. UAItK, TO-DAY. To-day’s Rugby fixtures arc worthy of a good oven speculation, as there is wry lit th* quarter to be given between Hu* two senior teams to meet on the Park at 3 p.m. On the last occasion that Star and Marist seniors met the day ended in a severe dis: ppointmont to all local supporters of the Rugby code, ami as a result the issue as to which is the superior team has yet to be decided. If both chibs put out their best this should be the most interesting contest seen this season. It would be hard to eclipse last Saturday’s junior match between Marist and United, but this game bids fair to come close to doing so. In view of Ihe spectacular matches played recently, the old faith in the Rugby competition has, 1 think, been revived, and it is fairly safe to predict that a large crowd will line the rails :.t the Park this afte:|oon. As juiblishcd, the Star team looks at its .usual strength, with I the exception of Ikirrow who has, hithI erto played junior. Williams, up till recently playing League, is also select- | ed and shapes well in the three-quar- | ter line. I'lie rem: inder of the team’s j combination can be relied upon to put j up a good showing as proven recently. Nelson ami Mclntosh have rendered I themselves c(msp : cuous in recent i matches bv holding the ball rather too I long, and the team would find it ad- •' vantageous if the leather was let out , to the supports on more frequent oee.'i- ■ sions. The forwards did fairly well last Saturday and. kept on the ball constantly. 'l'l’.e Marist t-am was handed in 100 late to afford much time for comment, but I venturi* the opinion that a lot will depend upon whether Ry: n, the trojan t!i ree-qua it er, will play, for he is an indispensible asset to the back division of this fifteen. Star now lead in the senior competition, having opts, Marist having scored; 2pts. If Marist emerge victorious from ■ to-day’s encounter it will place them on a level with Star iii this gr: de. The Marist juniors should fully extend Star juniors, whom they meet at 1.3 D p.m., and the chances of the former learn look fairly rosy. The same fifteen as defeated United on Saturday last has been selected : nd my opinion of the combination has been ventilated on previous occasions. Although I the forwards are spectacular in their persistent pursuance of .the locality ; of the play they by no means do alii the work, for the backs : re fast and < very nippy. Lake, the half-back, play- , ed a ’great game last Saturday and is! p.-rfe-tly at home in his posit'm'4. be-' hind the scrum. Whilst the Star team uppers to be at its usual capacity, it ( is not to be concluded that the match j will be a walk-over. but. unless they have improved during the past week or so, a few points should separate the scores. ('obden meets ’ nited at Cobden, and even if the ’cross tlieriver team got out their best, the issue does not seem to be in doubt. The} organised efforts of the United men t nearly proved too much for the Marist ' boys on S' turday last, and it will require somet !jing good to break this. Cobden, however, have some nippy backs' who will be sure to , ■ best against ; the larger team. Marist leads in the! Junior competition x\-ith -U, United following with 3L (’obden and Star are well down. Star being one game ahead . of the former. The fourth gr’ de competition has at-J traded a large number of supporters, and interested spectators usually view their games. United have a rather i easy proposition in Star, but Cobdeni will sir ke things up for D. 11.5, Both I these games will In* played in the Park. | ’ ']'() DA Y 'S F?XTUh’ES.
