MILLERTON NOTES.
(Our Own Correspondent.) ! UlO holiday in tho Award for the purpose of celebrating our King’s | Rrthday was held on Millerton on • June sth. Seeing, that the holiday ‘ tell on a Pay Saturday wo held it on Monday, not that we, as toilers, have • any misconceptions over the Sovor|eign’s biithday, but we take the holiday as a matter of course and endeavour to make as much amusement as possible out of it. j The Rangers Rugby football club played a team .selected from non-play-I ers on the Domain at 11. a.m., the Ran- , gers having an easy win. At 1-.30 p.m. I the United Soccer Team played the. Thistle Team. This was a good game, the Thistle Team winning bv 3 goals to It was the United Club’s fust (d*vme and this team will have to be reckoned with in the future. ‘ At 3 p.m., the Mokihinui. hockey girls played the Millerton hockey girls, ami it was an exciting game. The Mokihinui team proved too good, winj mng by 5 goals to J. There was great i excitem-ent throughout the game. Mr ; J. Tiplady, who was referee, had a very busy time keeping the game going. i ’When it was half through, a cow appeared on the hold and took charge of the ground, making some very fast rushes at some of the players. The cow seemed to take a violent dislike to the Millerton girls red jackets. Even cows dislike the colour! By the. use of a hockey stick, the referee soon expelled the brute from the held of play. The soccer teams on Millerton, three in number, have now affiliated with the N.Z. boccer Association, and this game is destined to become the popular game in this district. i The Wanderers team journeyed to ' Denniston on Saturday lust and were defeated by 2 goals to 1. The Wanderers were without 5 of their best players. The Wanderers and Thistle teams are playing a match on Milverton Domain on Sunday, June IS, the proceeds to go to the Russian Famine Fund. The match will be closely contested, ami a great deal of interest is being taken in this game. I'he Domain Board have requested me to advise teams who wish to play on 1 tho Domain in the future, to notify the ■chairman of the Domain Board -Mr K. ; McGregor of the time they wish to j play and tire time they require the i ground, so that no games will clash. The Mangatina Ball which was held | on Friday night last, was marred some- i what by the awful weather which pre- t vailed. Nevertheless, there was a v-erv fair attendance from Millerton . and Grunity. The music was supplied by Mr L. King, Mr T. McXeight ami Mr Joe King, and it was of a very high order. The duties of M.C. was cur- ■ ried out by T. Williams. The Sucre- . tary, Air O. Berg, and. his committee arc to be complim-ented on the excellent manner in which the ball was ca«ried out. During the evening Mr LJones, Mr S. Barnes, ami Mr T. Beverlaml supplied vocal items. which were highly appreciated by the danceis. . The supper was laid in Miss McCann s dining room, which was u credit to Miss . McCann and her stall’. The dancers left for home in the early hours of the : morning, promising themselves another I trip to Mangatina in the near future. [ ' The .second Pay Day lias passed with the reduction of wages, but still we see no material reduction in the cost of living. Everything seems to be the . same. V.’e appear to accept any in- ■ justice without even the slightest pro- i test. The Company take line care that every detail of the reduction is . taken from the men. 'I ho miners of . this Coast have now to get together ; and sec that their standard of living shall not be again tampered with. The . Court, without a doubt, lias inflicted the greatest hardship on the Coast miners by the last decrease—worse than on any other class of workers in New Zealand. This state of things cannot continue. Wages ranging from j 12/10 to 16/1 are. not sufficient for men to maintain their wives and families on at present, among these hills, where the excessive freights, etc. are passed on to the toiler. The. workers of the Coast have it in their own hands, if they arc prepared to get together and force tho maintenance, of u decent standard of living. Don’t let us wait till we are down to a gutter snipe wage! If our present Federation does not meet our requirements, let us move and do something, and not be, like a flock of sheep, waiting for a leader. Let us lead ourselves out of the bog we ar* at present in.
