The latest Great Northern Steeplechase is an example of history repeat ing itself. All three placed horses played a prominent part on the second day of last year’s Winter fixture in Auckland. Sea Deil, winner, who was in third place in the Great Northern Hurdles on the opening day, register ed a similar performance last year. On the second day he won the principal hurdles event, an accomplishment repeated on the concluding day, but this week he varied the experience by winning the big cross-country event. Omaha must be accounted decidedly unlucky as he was in second place in each race of last year’s Great Northern double and was brought down through no fault ot his own on Saturday. He was again runner-up in tho steeplechase, while at the recent Wan ganui meeting he followed the winner, Khartoum, home in the Wanganui Steeplechase. Coalition won the Great Northern Steeplechase last year, but Ids best was third this year. It is un usual to find three horses thus reproducing their best form in this marked fashion at an interval of 12 months. i Sea De’il is an aged chestnut geld ing by Seaton Delaval from Serila by Cardigan from Lady Cecilia by Cuirrssier from Ouida by Yattendon. The Ashburton bred Pavo is proving a veritable gold-mine for Mr 11. Fried lander, and racegoers will be thinking that there is more than mere relation ship in the fact that both Pavo and Gloaming claim The Welkin as sire. Demos, the winner of the Rank: w. Cup at the Otaki Meeting played prominent part at the Auckland Wii er Meeting last year, being in se.-• place in each of the big flat handle;; on the first and second days. The I son of Demosthenes and Jeanne d’A; started only once this year at the ;■ cent Wanganui meeting, where ho w unplaced. The form displayed by Romance v . particularly consistent throughout 1 Dunedin meeting. Commencing wit) a third place to Londonderry and Mr.’ drake on the opening dry in the Tri;. Hurdles, on the second day ho was asecond place to Pawerewere at his first attempt over the Wingatui eonutr,. and on Saturday he again improve.! winning the Tahuna Steeplechase. It" mance appears to be a good propositma for jumping events ahead. Roseday’s effort in the King GemHandicap at Wingatui on Saturdn was a particularly attractive one, and. the brother to Solfanello is likely tc. take much higher honours before h - career on the racecourse is terminate. Songbird was not disgraced by finishing fourth with 9.9 in heavy going. Falstaff improved on his second day’s showing and reversed positions with General Petain on Saturday at Dunedin. Rorke’s Drift was again close up and with additional experience over the smaller obstacles, he is likely to win a good hurdle race before the elose of the season.
