MEETING OF COMMITTEE. ‘ The Grey D. H. School Committee met last evening.. ,I’res-ent: Alessrs J. Tennant (chairman), J. Sherrat, H. Collins, T. B. Baty, Pullen, J. Weaver, <l. Whitburn (Sec.), R. J'. Williams, RECTOR ’S REPORT. • The. Rector (Mr H. IL Allison) reported: ‘‘Although the weather Ims been line the attendance is only satisfactory. Ou on-.* day there were over 6U chiblryn absent from the. primary department. Averages are: Secondary, 113 out of a total roll of 120; Primary, 510 —55<);; Blaketown. .104 —115; totals 727 —71’1. During the recent gale one of the fanlights in. the secondary department was blown in and a framed photograph of Mr Watkins damaged. This emphasises the necessity fur proper door fastenings and picture railings. Aliss AlcKnight is relieving Aliss Cornwall at Blaketown, the latter being in hospital with, diphtheria. Airs Farnell has been granted a further week’s leave of absence.” [ Air Pullen remarked that it was the ' prevalence of sickness rather than the weather which prevented a satisfactory . attendance in primary divisions. The Rector's report was adopted. | The- Greyniouth .Municipal Band offered their services in connection with the loyalty rally to-day. Received, and a vote of thanks was passed to the band. The Cobden School Committee wrote * approving of the appointment of ATr ! I’. .McKenzie to lhe. Board of Goverl iiors to the Technical School.—ReceivI The. Canterbury Education Board wrote stating that information had come to them through the medium of the Press of a discussion as to whether an honorarium should be presented to the Secretary of the Committee The payment of any such honorarium would be illegal. The letter was received, the Chairman remarking: ' 4 This is what the Press has let us in for.” Th? AVest Coast Centre of the Rugby League wrote suggesting the introduction of League football in the public schools. Air I’ullen did not think the Committee should take any action in this respect. It was suggested that the matter be rcl'erred to tin* headmaster. Air Weaver moved that uo action be taken. Mr AVilliams seconded. Air Bullen moved as an amendment that the matter be referred to the headmaster for his consideration. .Mr Collins seconded. A short discussion took place as to whether tin* committee or the headmaster should deal with the matter. Tho amendment was eventually carried. A credit balance of £2B Gs Gd was reported. Accounts totalling £!(’>/ Ils 9d wore passed for payment. Tin* Visiting Commit tee (Messrs Tennant and Williams) reported on a visit t<> both the Greymoiiih and Rlaketown schools, recommending several improvements and repairs. I The report was adopted, the various repairs recommended being authorised. . Tlx* Chairman reported on the visit . to the school of the Alinister of Education (Hmi C. J. Parr,. He said various matters put forward were promised consideration. The financial posi- ' lion of the committee had been placed before Air Spencer, with the result that rhe Commit-ce now had to supply the Department with a detailed statement of the linances. He hoped that as a result of tlx* representation the Committee would receive a little assistance towards paying the cost of the new school fence. The Department considered the school gates and fence a rather elaborate scheme. It was decided that the Secretary interview the Rector regarding stationery requirements at the school and any I replenishing of stocks wanted to be forwarded to th? Board for consideration. Alessrs I’ullen and Weaver were appointed a visiting committee for lhe month.
