A DRINK EVERY FOUR YEARS.

Mr I*. W. Wilson, an eminent Eng lish journalist after investigating jno hibition conditions in the U.S.A., say: of allegations about smuggling am I leakages: “To give every America: citizen one customary drink of rum o whisky in a year—that is in 365 day 1 —would consume 2,000,000 gallons o: spirits. If, then, one reads that 500,00'. gallons have ‘leaked’ somewhere, ii may be deplorable from the ‘dry standpoint, but it only means a drinl: all round once every four years. . . . To sum up, then, I have reported tc Britain that prohibtion has come tc stay, that it- is a policy particularly approved by women, that it has virtually stopped the consumption of beer and has enormously reduced the con sumption of* wines and spirits, without stimulating so far us can be ascertained, the taste, for drugs.” Sir John Salmond, after visiting the U.S.A., said: '“lt seemed qutie feasible that the younger generation might grow up without cultivating the taste for alcohol.” Prohibition in New Zealand is worth a trial.—N.Z.
