OLD BOYS’ ASSOCIATION.

ANNUAL BAIZ. The Town Hall was packed last evening for the annual ball of the Greymoutli Old Boys’ Association. Not only was tho dancing >pac<- taxed to its utmost capacity but the circle was largely patronised by spectators. Every preliminary arrangement had been attended to with the characteristic thoroughness of the 0.8. A. and consequently everything was dispose<l of without any hitch whatever. Excellent supper arrangements were carried out by a bevy of ladies, whose efforts in this capacity were appreciated by those present. Williams’s (Orchestra provided splendid dance music. The Mayor made a few remarks during the evening, referring to the good work accomplished by the 0.8. A., particularly in regard to the Old People’s Home. He felt pleased th: t the site advocated by the 0.8. A. had been approved by tiie Minister, lie regretted the absence of the president of the association (Mr W. Meates) whose illness prevented his attendance at the function. Mr T. E. Y. Seddon, M.P., made, a neat little speech ami complimented, the organisers on the very complete arrangements, which had made the function a wonderful success. A large ai/iount of credit for the success of tha ball was due to the willing band of helpers who had corny forward and assisted the officials in their task, particularly the ladies’ supper committee. PRESENTATION. A presentation of two gold modnls was made by the Mayor (Mr J. D. Lynch) to Messrs Aii*’m>ny Negri and IE Oawley, who toy 1; a prominent part in the rescue wqf\- in connection with the recent surf disaster. The speaker explained that the presentation was a private one, emanating ’from the generosity of a circle of friends of the two recipients. Mr Negri, :It hough being unable to swim, went out alone in a small boat and brought several people to shore, including the Misses Rivers, His action was a commendable one. Air Cawley was a member of the party who were proceeding to tho rescue in a small boat when The craft capsized, resulting in the desAh of one of tho occupants (Air Hutchings). The Mayor said lie hoped to be able at a future date to supplement the presentations with further recognition from a different quarter. He also mentioned that tho contributions to the di-aster fund amounted to £1034 which luxl been distributed : mong the relatives of the victims. He read a letter from Mrs Ha.nsen, of Nelson (sister of Mr Hutchin,gg) acknowledging receipt of £lOO ot? the money. Mr Cawley briefly replied and expressed regret Vir Hutchings was not present that; night to hr.-ir the appreciative remarks of his attempt at rescue.
