Mrs R. Rothwell was a passenger by Saturday evening's overland express. Mr and Mrs M. Donnellau returned to town by the express on Saturday evening. Air J. 11. Elliot, of To Awanmtu, has declined a request to stand as Liberal candidate for Waikato seat. A London cable states Sir Erie Geddes has been selected for the jjost ot Director of Dunlops firm. It is likely that Mr W. R. Devereux will contest the Christchurch East scat in the Reform Party’s interests at the General Election. Mr F. Doogan, who leaves to-morrow for Auckland, is to be given a send-off this evening by his friends at the Recreation Hotel. The Rev. Father L. Daly, of Dannevirke, arrived on the Coast by Saturday’s express, and is visiting his relatives at Hokitika. Mr D. Gillies, Public Works engineer for the West Coast district, will retire on superannuation in August of this year. Mapor J. B. Hine, ex-M.P., of Stratford, is making satisfactory progress towards recovery from a recent severe illness, which attacked him, it is believed, as a result of inoculation against fever while in Palestine. A requisition signed by a large number of residents has been forward-ed to Sir Joseph Ward asking to allow himself to be nominated as a candidate for the Rotorua .constituency at the next Parliamentary election.

It is stated that two members of the Rugby Union, including Mr A. Adams, the referee, have resigned their positions on that body. It is understood the union has not accepted the resignations, and it is to be hoped they will be withdrawn in the interests of the game. An old Recfton identity, Mr Jas BilLctt, died on Friday at the ago of 72. He resided for many years at Caplcston, but had been in weak health for a long time. He leaves two daughters (Mrs J. B. McMyn and Mrs Simmis both of Reefton). The late Mr Bill-ett was a native of Bath, England, aud was predeceased by his wife some eight or nine years ago. Mr H. E. Holland, M.P., reached Greymouth on Saturda.v evening last, suffering with an exceedingly severe cold. He accompanies the Minister of Education through the Buller elect orate during tho coming week; and will then return to Dunedin, where he is to speak in support of the Labour Party’s candidature on June 7. A-ftcr that he is to carry his Dominion campaign as far as Hastings, Napier, and Gisborne, returning from the latter place for the session’s opening. He will deliver his policy speech at Auckland early in July —probably immediately before j'iG party’s annual conference, which is be held in the northern city this vear.
