SPORTS AWAKE!
— I I In these worrying and strenuous I plays, it is certainyl desirable that wholesome outdoor sport and amusement lie encouraged. | However, there seems to he a section of the public who wish to curtail the 1 innocent pleasures of the people as a i whole. Their efforts arc apparently often successful, a prominent, instance being afforded by the banishment of bookmakers. However, the populace — which is alI wavs slow to move, but which takes [a considerable amount of stopping once it has started —is at last realising that things are not just as they should be. A petition to have the Gaming Law revised, so that bookmakers lie allowed to operate on racecourses again, is > being circulated in all parts oi the I Dominion, and is meeting with very gratifving support. 'Phis petition points out the great advantages of licensing bookmakers, chief among which are the facilities offered to poorer people to enjoy the ‘‘sport of kings, ’ and the new fields of revenue opened to the Government. Only by united effort can success in routing the “kill-joys’’ be achieved, and all sports are therefore asked to append their signatures to the petition, which can be seen ami signed almost j anywhere aid now. When petitions are tilled up they s’ eild be promptly returned to Box . i ' ' . Wellington. C 7
