After having remained ashore near Farew‘ll Spit for nearly three months, the three-masted schooner Valmarie was refloated on Tuesday, and Mr E. G. F. Zoharb’s tug Pelican was dispatched from Wellington for the purpose of towing the vessel to cither Picton or Wellington. Laden with 130,000 superficial feet of hardwood, comprising poles, hewn, and sawn timber, and sleepers for Wellington and Greymouth, the Valmarie cleared Grafton, Clarence River on January 31. and went ashore eight miles west of the Farewell Spit lighthouse in quite moderate weather at 10 a.m. on Thursday, February 10. Captain G. Schultze was in command of the schooner. An unsuccessful attempt was subsequently made by the auxiliary scow Kohi to lighten the Valmarie’s cargo by removing 150 tons, and it was finally decided by the underwriters to dispose of the schooner at auction on March 29. The hull and equipment were purchased by Mr A. E. Tasker, of Nelson, who also bought the hardwood cargo for the sum of £BO. The Valmarie cost something over £12,000 when built in 1919, and her present cargo was valued at approximately £3OOO.
