WANGANUI HARBOUR.

BIG IMPROVEMENT EFFECTED. AT SMALL COST. WANGANUI, May 14. The ery “Back to Nature! ” has been adopted with good results by the Wanganui Harbour Board. A compartively small sum was spent on the Harbour works during the past year, yet by gently guiding the natural current of tho tides, and by stopping the sand drift, :i marked improvement has been wrought. It was reported at tho annual meeting of the Board that tho port entrance now shows tho greatest depth yet recorded, namely 24 feet 3 inches at high water spring tides, and 21 feet 3 inches average highwater depth. The depth has been increasing, month by month, since the new methods were adopted. Mr A. G. Bignell, who was re-elected Chairman for another term, expressed the confident belief that liners would be berthed at Castlecliff in the near future. Tho depth of the water in the river channel to the town wharf has also been much improved. the shallowest portion being now 14 feet deep.
