ANGLICAN SYNOD.
LIQUOR QUESTION. AUCKLAND, May 5. Regarding the liquor question tho Anglican Synod adopted a resolution, put forward by the Primate, in place of the motion moved previously by Archdeacon Chatterton. The Primate’s resolution reads: —“That this Synod expresses its strong conviction that it is the bounden duty of Christian people, unless they are prepared to vote for total prohibition, to have some other drastic remedy for an evil which is sapping the morals and efficiency of the community.’’ PRIMATE’S TITLE ALTERED. The Synod carried a bill for an alteration of the title of primate of NewZealand to “Primate and Archbishop.’’ The bill originally proposed only “Archbishop,’’ but was amended in the committee stages. The mover. Dr Sadler, stated New Zealand was the only province of the church in the Empire which hadn’t adopted this historical and traditional title. A few members opposed the bill, on the ground that, by adopting too many titles the church would be in danger of losing touch with her people. Dr. Julius said that a similar proposal was made previously, when ho opposed it. The position of Primate was not one that lifted tho presiding Bishop very above his fellows, and he had a fancy that Arehibishops had a habit of giving thmeselves airs. Ho wanted to retain the very friendly relations that now existed. He remembered saying in 1910, what was good enough for the late Bishop Selwyn was good enogh for them. His opinions were the same to-day. He would vote against the bill. The title operates immediately.
