THE N.S.W. MATCHES. NEW ZEALANDERS DO WELL. SYDNEY, May 1. Aitken was the only New Zealander in action at the Tennis • .irnival, she having received a forfeit in the singles match. She lost the doubles with Graham against Anderson and Spratt o—B, 4—6, (i—s, 5 —7. Aitken failed to dovetail with her partner’s play, but was responsible for the lion’s share of the work. She has not yet struck form, but h*cr driving and smashing is excellent. Victor’s play was characterised by its steadiness. Anderson is a brother of the Davis’s Cup representative. The ladies take part in five championships on Tuesday. (Received May 3, 11.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, May 3. The tennis tourney was continued in muggy weather. Misses Curtis and Miefarlane were in excellent form, both being successful, winning two contests each. The New Zealanders generally had a successful day. In. the Ladies’ Singles Championship, Miss • Macfarlane beat Miss Sinclair, 6—l, 6—4. She also bi at Miss Bedgood 6 —2, 4—6, G—3. She gave.a fine exhibition in each contest, her steady driving and smashing being the dominating factors in her victories. Though practically experimenting with net play, she acquitted herself with distinction in this department. Miss Curtis beat Mrs Fuller, 6 —4, 6—4, after a close game. The former’s strong volleying being the chief feature. Miss Wellwood had an easy victory over Miss Stubbs, In the Ladies’ Doubles Championship Misses Curtis and Lascelles beat Mrs Fuller and Miss Sinclair, (5—2, 6—2. The winners combined splendidly, Miss Curtis’s volleying being again strongly in evidence. The victory, however, was attributable chiefly to mistakes by Miss Misses Well wood and Smith beat Misses Dodd-Mead and Cox in two sets straight (though the losers pushed them (‘very inch of the way), B—6, B—G. The minor results were: Special Men ’s Doubles, Kirkpatrick and Aitken beat Baker and Lees, (5—2, G —4. Mixed Doubles Handicap, Green and Green beat Baker and Patterson, G—4, 3—6, In the Ladies’ Doubles Handicap, Misses Green and Brewster boat Misses Hunt and Miller. 6—l G—o. Misses Elliott and Bull beat Misses Hartgell and G. Curtis, G—l, G—2.
