NEW GOVERNMENT IN HOLE. OVER SALARY REDUCTIONS. [A. and N. Z. Cable Association] SYDNEY, May 2. The “Herald” says: The members’ salaries controversy involves the possibility of a Government defeat, should the Progressives move an amendment for a further reduction in Minister’s salaries as they would carry the Labour vote. The Progressives urged the Goernment to allow the question to be open and leave the decision to the House. Sir G. W. Fuller refused, but in consequence of the strength of the opposition discussed, it is believed that he will compromise. Cabinet meets to-day to make a definite decision. The “Ilerald” adds: Ministers by haggling and fighting against a reduction of their own salaries have done themselves and party considerable harm which could have been avoided if they had confided their intentions to their followers. After an acrimonious discussion, the Coalition decided to support the Cabinet Salaries Bill, which it is feared several will vote with Labour, if the latter proposes a further reduction in Ministers’ salaries. Mr Dooley issued a statement from his home justifying the increases on the grounds that country members when travelling, are put to an expense, of £2 per day, which leaves little for the maintenance of their families, after £2 extra has been earmarked for election expenses. He contends that a reduction will play into the hands of the wealthy classes, who can afford public life. CATTS’S EXPULSION. APPROVED BY A.L.P. SYDNEY, May 2. The Federal Labour Party Executive endorsed the action of the Now South Wales Executive in expelling Mr Catts. They state that anything amiss in the movement should bo remedied from within. FEDERAL APPROVAL. SYDNEY, May 2. The Commonwealth has signified approval of the State Government land scheme for settlement in the Murray Valley, Northern Tablelands, Burrinjuiek, and North Coast.
