TOURNEY AT SYDNEY. SYDNEY, May 2. The tennis championships were continued in fine but cool weather. The Courts show signs of wear and tear, to which courts the New Zealanders were accustomed. As a consequence the courts were fast in places and patchy, putting the New Zealanders in some instances off the game. Besides in the singles and doubles 'events several New Zealanders also paired with their interstate partners in the mixed doubles. In the men’s singles Poulton (Wales) beat Aitken 6—4, 6 —4, 6—2. In the mixed doubles Poulton and Mrs Docker beat Aitken and Wellwood 6—l, 6—2.. Aitken was unable to reproduce his form of either the singles or doubles. Poulton smashed and served excellently and was well supported by Docker. Well wood was unable to got going properly with Aitken. Carr and Cox boat Hartgell and Brewester (s—l, 6—3. With comparative ease Henderson and MacFralanc beat Mellor and Sinclair 6—2, 6—3. MacFarlane showed greatly improved form, driving beautifully and indulging in smashing successfully. Her backhand work and all round play was first class. Tn the ladies’ doubles Curtis and Lascelles beat Mrs Cooling ami Meaney 6 —l, 6—o. In a one-sided game Mrs Turner and Mrs Nicholson beat MacFarlane and Payton 6—l, 7—5. The winners who were the headier players excelled in placing and all round play. Well wood and Smith beat Mrs Green and Brewster 7 —5, 6—3. Smith possesses a peculiar underhand drive, which bothered the losers. In the special doubles match Mrs Green and Hartgell beat Rice and Morris 4—6. 9—7. 6—4. Green excelled in smashing, throwing her full weight into the strokes. Tn the men’s special singles Aitken beat McCausland 6—1., B—6, displaying considerably improved form on the morning exhibition. In the ladies’ singles championship. Mrs Fuller beat Pay ton 3—6, 6—l, 6—4. Payton won the first set, but played short in the subsequent sessions being unable to strike the length. Fuller used better judgment, placing judiciously and her play was steadier all round. In the ladies’ singles handicap, bliss Taylor beat Mrs Hartgell 6—.1, 6 —4.
