BOY STEALS JEWELS.
SELLS VALUABLE DIAMOND FOR 1/-. DETECTIVE’S LUCKY COLP. ■ (Received May lat 7.20 p.m.) HOBART, May 1. I The chance presence of a detective in a jeweller’s shop led to the restoration ot valuable diamonds to their owner. A boy entered the shop, and presented and asked the value of a fini 1 diamond. The jeweller valued it at £BOO. The detective questioned the i oy. who said that he bought it. with two smaller diamonds, from another boy for a shilling and a pistol. He said he showed it to several persons, and had tried to sell it for a small sum. Some told him it was glass and useless, and others that it was worth £lOOO and he took it to the jeweller's to asI certain the value. J The detective discovered the other j boy, who had a quantity of valuable jewellery in his possession from which I lot this diamond was obtained. The second boy confirmed the sale of the jewel, and he admitted taking the jewellery from a residence in town. The occupier of the house was advised of the confession, but he first denied that he lost any jewellery, but later he agitatedly reported that he had lost a brootfh and ring which had contained the jewels which the boy was hawking round.
