OTIRA NOTES.

(Our Own Correspondent.) Mr J. If Cowin, clerk nt Otira Station, returned from his annual leave last week. The Hon. Mr Coates, Minister of Public Works, was here recently, as was Mr Gillies, of Greyniouth. Air Coates and his party of four came Io Arthur’s Pass by special train, and came through Hie bill on the same day, ; ml returned on the following day. About a week ago one of our local residents bad the misfortune to have a cool bath in full dress. It appears that he, in company wdth another gentleman, was inspecting the top floor of the power house, and the former slipped and fell into one of the concrete cavities, which at the time was full of water. His companion came to his aid and helped him out. Gee! I bet it was cold! Mr E. Matthews is at present indisposed. His many friends will wish him a speedy recovery. Prior to her departure from here, the boarders at. the Otira Terminus Hotel tendered Mrs Penhalluriack a farewell, ami Mr P. Gallagher, on behalf of the boarders, presented her with n salad bowl and a silver cake dish. Subsequently a public farewell was tendered. Airs Penhalluriack, :.t the Miners’ Hall, and songs were rendered during the evening by Messrs Struthers, Harrow, Garland, and others. Air Robinson, in a few well-chosen words, recalled the. good qualities of the guest, among them being her never-failing work in the interests of the children. On behalf of tin' residents of Otira, he presented her with a solid silver tea service. Airs Penhalluriack suitably replied. Dancing followed, and it was continued until 3 a.in., Air E. Fell performing the duties of M.C. while the music, was supplied by Air and Airs Robinson, and it was really appreciated. Airs Smith and Aliss O’Malley arrived from Christchurch last week. Air .lames O’Alalley has taken over tin* Terminus Hotel. The sports here the other week-end were very good. In the Handicap Saw, Miss Alallinson and Air Cameron were I first, Air and Airs Toohey second and Air Goodyer and Airs Jackson third. Time, 32 2-ssee. The 100 yards resulted: Robinson 1, Carmine 2, Fell 3. Time, Ilsee. The 15-inch Chop was won by: Cressy (25sec) 1, Evans (scr) 2, Aitken (20sec) 3. 'l’ime, 1.5. Every credit is due to the officials for the industrious manner in which they worked and the quick way in which they got the events off. I sincerely hope that another meeting will be held in the near future.
