SCULLING

NEXT WORLD’SyHAMPIONSHIP. Writing in the “Sportsman,” “Astar” says:— The next race for the world’s sculling championship promises to be the goods and unless the judgment of the majority of the followers of the sport is sadly astray it will be a race worth going hundreds of miles to see. Both Hadfield and Paddon are beginning to settle down to serious training in earnest. Both men realise that they are up against the biggest proposition in th' ir lives and they are leaving no stone u * turned that they may be thoroughly : and well for the race. Paddon is undoubtedly one of tii 1 finest scullers in Australasia, and Had field occupies a similar place in the rowing and sculling world. I prefer Paddon’s chances of victory myself, but if there is more than a half-length , separating the two at the finish of the race on April IS I will be very surprised. The race will be a ding-dong struggle from the start to the finish. What About Amst? Dick Arnst has challenged the winner of the Hadfield-Paddon race and has lodged a deposit of £lOO. Arnst believes that his form against Hadfield on January 6, was all wrong, and he desires to prove this fact. Personally, I think Arnst has been very ill-advised to attempt another come-back. He is getting on in years and has had his fling in the sculling world and an uncommonly good fling his has been. His career has been meteoric, but youth will tell its talc and a new and younger generation of scullers are springing up. Arnst should definitely retire on his hard-won laurels.
