VESSELS RECOMMISSIONED. DUNEDIN, January 17. Several of the Union Company’s steamers, which had been laid up at various New ZeAind ports for some time past have been recommissioned for service within the past week. Seamen and firemen have suffered through the laying up of the ships, many having been ashore for several weeks, and some for months. Many are feeling the pinch. Relief was, therefore felt last week when it became known that the Wanaka and Kaituna, which had been idle at oPrt Chalmers, were to resume trading immediately. These vessels, which left Dunedin a few days ago, provided employment for a large number of seamen and firemen. Further relief has come with the announcement that the Kakapo, also laid up at Port will be placed in commission next week. Union steamers recommissioned at other ports are the Katoa, Kurow and Waipori at Auckland, the Kaikorai at Wellington and the Kaitoke at Lyttelton. Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton and Dunedin have had their share of unemployed seamen and firemen since the shipping slump commenced.
