It appears that he ° had been drinking during the day, > and about 8.30 p.m., went to his wife’s r house in Araey Street and savagely' attacked her. Airs Huchens, who livd cs opposite Airs Quartcrmain, called s her to come to her house for protecY tion which she did being pursued d across by Quartcrmain. On reaching Huchcn’s gate he leant over it drew H a razor and made a terrible gash in y bis throat. He then opened Hie gate and pursued Airs Quartcrmain into the u house with blood streaming from him. 1 Miss Huchcns met him in ihe passage, '• and received a dreadful shock. He c then again attacked Airs Quartero main, but being weak from loss of blood did nut succeed in injuring her. t He walked out of the house and sato on tho verandah steps, and in a lew v minutes collapsed. Dr Alcßrearty was e sent for and was quickly in att-end-o anee, and bound up the wound, which d was an awful one, the jugular veins e and wind-pipe being partly severed. Tlio unfortunate man seemed perfectn ly conscious as he laid in the garden alter being attended to by the doctor, li and said good-bye to sonic of his c mates, who wero standing by. He o complained of a severe pain in his e stomach, and asked the doctor for •- something to ease it and put him out d of h's misery. He wished also to s say good-bye to his wife and children. Later Quartcrmain was taken to the n Hospital where he succumbed at 10.20 o p.m. Ho had on several occasions told L - some of his mates that he intended a. to commit suicide, but was not taken a seriously. Yesterday, ho remarked to p uno of them that- he was going to do it to-night- 3 lie deceased was a ' prominent bandsman and well-kviown a in band circles. Aluch sympathy is h extended lo Airs Quartermain who has it had a severe• trial lately.
