DEMAND FOR GOVERNMENT EXPENDITURE. CHRISTCHURCH, April fi. Owing to the level of Lake Coleridge having fallen eight feet. The Government have diverted Harper River into the lake. The diversion works were only temporary, ami are liable to be swept away the first big
flood. Tn view of this fact ami the serious effect, a stoppage of the electrical supply would have in industry, the Government were urged tn proceed with permanent diversion wrnks estimated locally to .-ost five thous-md pounds; but in view* nf financial stringency the Gov'ethimenf declined the request. its estimate nf the cost being £10.060.
