AUSTRALIAN MARINE STRIKE.
SYDNEY, December 29. . The recommendation of the Transport Workers' Federation was rejected by a mass meeting of stewards, who stated that there were only two avenues open for reconciliation, namely, a conference with the shipowners or the appointment of a special tribunal. The coastal owners are meeting the strikers'representatives on Tuesday,, but inter-State owners arc maintaining an attitude of no compromise, and are insisting on the men resuming work unconditionally before the conference can be held. Only stewards oh Australian articles left the Moeraki. A dozen on New Zealand articles are expected to stand-by. ■ The Union Company announces that the Moeraki will sail for Wellington to-morrow, and, an effort will also be made to despatch the Manuka" and the Maheno as portions of their crews are on New Zealand articles, i As the crews of the various vessels are paid off, the ships are to be tied up in the stream. An enormous amount of tonnage is already idle at Sydney and Newcastle. In Melbourne it is estimated that 40,000 tons are idle.
