HOSPITAL BOARD SECRETARY
DISCUSSION BY BOARD
MISS KILUOUR Al'l'Ulx, I'ED. At the last meeting of the Grey Eospital and Charitable Aid Board, resultant upon the Secretary having been relieved of his dutiejs, Miss Kilgour was appointed acting-secretary at a salary of £3 5s per week. A committee consisting of Messrs J. Hannan, J. McCarthy, and F.Williams was appointed to go into the I matter of appointing a permanent secretary. Towards the close of last evening's meeting, the matter came up for discussion, and Mr. Parfltt moved that Miss Kilgour be appointed secretary at a salary of U per week. He expressed thg, opinion that Miss Kilgour had proved herself capable of carrying out the duties. . Mr. Skoglund seconded this motion. Mr. Cottle: I will more an amendment that applications be called for a male secretary at a salary of £300 per year. The position is not one for a lady. The work is too hard and the outside duties often too unpleasant. Mr. Skoglund: Did not you, at the last meeting, say that this business of the secretaryship had begun to stink "i the nostrils «f decent people, and that, we had better try a lady in the position? Mr, Cottle: That is so Mr. Skoglund: Then why do you change your mind now? Continuing, Mr. bkoglund said that the duties could quite easily be carried out by , Miss Kilgour. Members of the Board could assist the secretary by interviewing the people in ninny" of the cases necessary. Mr. Williams said he was a member of the committee set up to 'deal with the question of the appointment of a secretary. At the outset, he had been m favour of calling applications for a male .secretary at a oood salary.' Alter going into the matter, he- had varied his opinion, and he came to the conclusion that Miss Kilgour was capable ot doing the work. His reasons wore that he considered that the work Si .
