BRUNNER NOtES

AMUSEMENTS.

The Stillwater Softool Committee concluded their series of euchre tournaments last Friday. The prize winners on, this ■ occasion were Miss Martin and Mr. E.. Baxter. Promptly at ten o'clock suppei' was partaken of, after which the floor wns cleared for dancing, and fully 20 couples graced the floor, visitors being present, from Greymouth and NgaKefc. During a brief respite, the ■ chairman of the committee briefly thanked one and all for their unstinted patTonagc throughout the season, stating, inter alia, that the sum of ten pounds was now in hand, and would be devoted to one or more objects for the material, benefit of the school children, of the district, particulars of which avou'M be decided in the near future. Everything went off really well, the floor being superb, whilst the music, in the .capable hands of Mrs. Hunt, left nothing to be desired. Two a.m. brought the end of a perfect evening for those to whom a. pleasant dance is a tonic and an inspiration. On Friday evening next a concert and dance will be held in the Convent schoolroom. The talent, am told, will be something in "the nature of a treat. The object, I understand, is a very worthy one, and lovers of song and story, to say nothing of the light fantastic, will be, I feel sure, there in full force, and having done so will, I predict,, have no pangs of regret. A meeting of representatives of the various schools was held in Wallscnd on Monday evening, for the. purpose of deciding whether or not 'they would hold the annual combined schools excursion picnic. As delegates from Dobson were absent, through insufficient notice of the meeting being given them, the meeting was adjourned until to-night (Wednesday). I predict that opinion will be very divideil upon the subject and a full muster is therefore essential to ensure a true majority decision. GENERAL. . Very good work is at present, being effected, on the Maori Gully by the local Borough Council. Being of new formation, the wheel tracks were becoming positively dangerous to traffic, and the attention now being devoted to repairs is certainly good policy. These remarks "will not apply to v our main road, which is getting from bad to worse. The culverts .at Dobson are a disgrace, and, although authority to spend the money that was granted for this purpose "has been received, yet this very necessary work is, as of yore, still in abeyance, notwithstanding its positively dangerous # condition in wet weather particularly. In this matter considerable patience has been displayed by residents of this locality. If I may be pardoned for again' mentioning the .re-erection of the Wallsend-Taylorvillc footbridge, it appears that the powers that be are resting on their oars, as if the work was of. no importance worth while. Mr. T. Murray," of bridge fame, has the contract, whilst the residents have the inconvenience. Perhaps we had betteT celebrate the anniversary next month and then let the subject drop where the bridge dropped, and try and forget that it ever existdd. PERSONAL. Mr. M. Moore, of Stillwater, who has had an enforced stay at the Grey River Hospital for several days, has now sufficiently recovered to go home, and left the institution last Saturday. Mr. Jno. Masters has also returned home from the institution, and, considering the severity of his illness, he looks remarkably well. If the wishes of his many friends can be enforced, he will be out "for keeps" this time. \- ■ ■
