NGAKAWAU NOTES!
NGAKAWAU SPORTS MEETING,
It is rather a striking commentary in the apathy of athletic sports promoters in and around Greymouth (Mawheraiti execpted) that no attempt h?.s been made to put on a programme of athletic and cycling events that would draw a good field of well-trained athletes. Naturally the war period saw a great slackening off in athletic competition, but more than enough time has elapsed since the cessation of hostilities to have marie more serious nttempt at an athletic revival on the Coast centres than has hitherlo been the case. ' , ' ■\Vi"-n we see such a fine prog-mmine afivTHsed as tl>^+ whifh tim "WrsT-*. wan Sports Association have issued for their New Year's Day gathering, we cannot but congratulate this country association on their enterprise. The programme includes a Sheffield Handicap of a total value of £20: 440 yards handicap £8, 220 yards handicap! £6, half-mile handicap £10, as well as a 100 yards Buller Championship for a gold medal. In addition to these fine prizes, there are sawing, chopping, and various events to interest the crowds. Over £60 is being given in cash prizes, as well as numerous trophies. We commend the programme to athletes all through the Coast. Entries close with the Secretary, Mr W. Phipps, Ngakawau, on December 20th, and those who desire further information aTe referred to the poster programmes* which may be seen at th R shops of the various hairdressers in Greymouth. and at the shop of Mr A. Lawn. Hokitika.
