MILLERTON NOTES

(Our Own Coirespondent.) :Weather permitting, next Saturday December 4 the Miners Union will run tinue their postponed sports on th< Millerton Domai.i . There are all kindi of events for young and old and a good days sport is anticipated. } Ai night the Millerton Boxing Asso cintion will hold their tournament th< star item is Senior of Westport anc "Devlin" of Holjfit'ika.. S'e.iiqv will be giving away a good deal of weighi but nevertheless he contends that h< has a good chance of winning. The oilier events are Henderson of Mil leiton and Hardic of Dennisto.i. Tins event is causing a good deal of interest Phibbs of Westport will meet Skipton a recent arrival from Wales who has a. wonderful record to his credit. He will have a tough proposition in Tommj Phibbs. Dunn of' Westport and Dellaway ol Denniston will also be a good fight and it is hard to pick the winner. The two young lads {Worthin^ton ami Shaw will be well worth seeing; these two ai'e both very clever in the noble art. Given a good night everything shoi-l. be O. K. at Millerton. The local owners of trotters all have their horses in full trai.iing. Dr Simpson lias Suddite going well. (We all look forward to a big div at Ohistmas) E.. McDonald is trying on tho comeback stunt with Dick Bee. He expects to get a good win at Christmas but with Suddite in the field Dick Bee will be one of the also started. Wo advise "Me" to put Dick Bee back in the gig for which he is mov"e adapted. We. hear that our local publicans have received summonses to appear at Court for trading after hours. It 's rather unfortu.iaito that the; police should think fit- to raid a. couple ol pubs which are so quietly run as th« Millerton pubs are. It seems a shame that the miner should be denied the right t oget a drink after siz o'clock. The average miner owing to his calling generally likes a drink at night and it is impossible for him to get home have tea and get a drink before six. o'clock t'f course this is the law of the land and unfortunately we have, to submit, but we consider that these condition? should be considered by the authorities. The pleasures of these mining camps are very few and if the output of coal is to be maintained the men who sacrifice their lives living in such places as these for the benefit of the community should not be denied any little compensation or their sacrifice. T Tiave no time for the man that drinks excess, but in these cases he can easily, be dealt with. My appeal is on i behalf of the average, miner who requires stimulant to maintain his energies to produce the- "black diamonds" Why deny him the right to get H ? The County Council has now taken the Miller/lon VoJuntefcr Haiti over from the Government. We hope now that the council will immediately r ix the Hall up and make it fit for the public for" their amusements. At present it is more like a big barn, with not one. degree of comfort. AYe believe that our. County Chairman will linstpn these improvements. A general meeting of the Miners Union was held on Sunday last. Circulars from the Federation were, read and discussed and referred to the Gen eral Manager. The union failed to get any redress from the mine manager-*, who apparently delight in fighting the Fnion Officials to the last ditch thus putting the union to as much expe.ise as possible. The result of the ballot for Executive- Mfember of the Federation, for this district was read, it resulted in a win for Mr F. H. Grant the loc-u unions nominee. We have no douht but tlit Mr' Grant will fill the position with credit. He has been many years in Millerton now and his career a^s a unionist has always been of the best Influenza is again attacking some of our residents. The latest to be hud up are Mr J. M." Stewart and Mr A. I). Spencer. I am pleased to say that they are both improving. THE "WESLEYAN WIGGLE." ■ DIVINE ALARMED AT NAMES OF NEW DANCES. NEW YORK, October 1. Dr John R. Stratton, the well-known Nov.- York divine, prewiring in Calvary 3ap ist Church, attacked the modern lanre as a "bait of the devil." Re■'crriiig to the recent convention of the A-iiK-riean: National Association of Danzing Masters, he said:-*— "The plea these men make that they :lcsi:e to 'purify the dance' and make t safe is idle and entirely beside the point. You cannot purify a pole-cat.'' THE "JOHN THE BAPTIST I BOUNCE. ' ' Tlic action of the dancing masters in laming their new dance "the Wesleyan," Dr Stratton declared, was an insult to the entire Christian world. Phe new dance, he prophesied, will 'soon be turned into 'the Wcsleyan Wiggle,' and will be followed by 'the Episcopal (Embrace,' 'the Congregarional Canter,' 'the Presbyterian Pro- * menade,' and 'the John the Baptist J Jounce. ' "The only way to fight this 'bait >f the devil,' " he said, "is to. destroy it root and branch. The weak sxcuses that people, make in .iustification of the modern^dance are idle. Some . ;ay we ought to dance for the sake of jrace, but the only grace in the mod- ■ ;rn dance is the disgrace in it."— Central News.
