TOKITIKA TRACK NOTES.

(By "Furlong.") ! . Saturday, night did not look as if it was going to allow one to see the - horses working on Sunday morning. However, the rain just managed to - keep off until ten o'clock on the Sunday) and all the horses except Tyson had worked. Then it began to rain, and is still raining. The next three weeks will have to contain better weather for the horses to have a chance to get in some fast work. Tantalus, as usual, was the first, to • appear on the track, and with Charlie Wasley in. the saddle, he was given two circuits at three-quarter pace. He pulled up well and fresh,- and is no doubt benefiting from the results of ,4 the good wintering he has had. The c son of Treadmill — Flitaway should pay c his way these days. 3. Next came Palladium. F. Johnston t was in the saddle. He was given a :. fast gallop over five and a"half/urlongs. He seems rather big and at ;- the end of his task was tiring badly. I. Grand Duchy, with F. Smith up, l, and Ince North, with Johnson up, r were net on the track. Both horses 1 completed one circuit at half pace. i. Then they hopped off from the five i and a half furlongs. Grand Duchy , led till over the first two furlongs, , and then Ince North took charge. On , entering the straight 'both horses were r level and Ince North was lighting for , his head as they flashed past the , post. 'Grand Duchy was just ahead • of Inee North. It was v good por--1 formance on the part of both horses, and speaks particularly well for the ' youngster. Lady Middleton, with Smith up, and > the Gasolene — Hari Hari youngster. 1 with Johnson up, were next. Lady L Middleton galloped at half pace, keep- ' ing about six lengths in front of the youngster for the first circuit. They L both went off at top from the five ; furlong peg. Lady Middleton worked i very well, but the young horse seemed ta be a bit iicry. He will need i .-some good horseman to control him in company. Tyson reeled . off five furlongs in 'good style. There were a goou number of trotters in evidence. Dick Thompson was first out with Rita H., who was given five rounds at a solid pace. She showed an inclination to break often, but Dick seems to keep her down by talking to her. If she will keep down for him with the colours flying, she should pay exes. Mary Hill, with McCarthy up, wa? given four rounds without the.straps. She worked very well. I see Jack McCarthy has started to give Whispering Molly some work, in view of the Christmas meetings. This little mare docs not work well in the saddle, and seems to move faster in harness. One did seem impressed by her showing. Trojan was' an attender, but was not worked. He had been on the track the day before, and his trainer only works him every second day. He looks particularly well, and should pay his way, if he keeps sound. Prince Mac was given four rounds. This fellow Telishes his work, and pleased his connections. One will be surprised if he fails to land a stake. Maurice Patrick has decided to take Driftwood down to the farm to dc s;tud duty, where he has been promised good support. He has left Grand Duchy' in F. T. Smith's stable Alf Hargreaves has arrived in oir. midst with Xanthos and Silver Shield While in conversation with Alf,- hf consented to show me his charges Xanthos is in great condition an<" looks' bright and healthy. Silver Shield seems a different horses, anr his trainer says that he will be a dif < ferent horse this Christmas. How ever, this would not come as a sur prise, as aTI followers of the sport know that horses in Alf's care have always had every chance that an honest trainer can give them. There is one thing that Alf knows, and it is exactly what is required of horses to win on this Coast. Mr. P. Kirwan has a full sister to Romeo in training, by Romany Rye — , Echo. She is on the small side, but * this will not alter matters if she has the foot. f There were a good few people in attendance at the racecourse on Sunday 'morning, and amongst them was a former trainer here, Mr. F. Lynch, who was surprised to see so many horses in Avork. Messrs Donnellan and Shannahan have engaged three boxes in town for the Christmas meeting. It is believed Sleepy Head and Benefit will occupy two of them. When boxes a*e be- " ing reserved so early, it points to . something doing at Christmas. Well, if this is so, it is only what the local club deserves. The following horses are in training in town: — Gallopers: Lady Middleton, Tyson, Palladium, Tantalus. North Inch, Xanthos, Grand Duchy, " Silver Shield, a Gasolene — Hari Hari filly, and a Nautiform — Jenny Colleen colt. ° S' The trotters arc: Mary Hill, Miss c Rye, Tanekaha, Prince Mac, Rita H., t Trojan, a Jedran— Rita H. colt, Whis- g . poring Molly, Romeo, Romany Rye, and a filly by Romany Rye— Echo.
