THE RING

1. - - I SHADE AND UEEN;. ' • UREN UNABLE TO FIGHT.

The niatch between Tommy Uren 5 (Australia) and Billy Shade (Amerie ca)j, which was to have taken place at the Sydney Stadium on Saturday J last did not eventuate. 1 From private advice received by a j member of'the "Argus" staff,- it is , learned that Urcn's hand prevented him from meeting Shade. However, Francis Charles, the French 'welter-weight, acted as substitute for Uren, but Shade added an- / other victory to his already long list. The fact that Uren was unable to take the ring will be a keen disappointment to boxing enthusiasts, astne meeting of these two was eagerly looked forward to. When they last dashed Shade landed a k.o. in. the 19th round,, when Uren was said to have been well ahead on points, and there is much speculation as to whom will emevge victor at their ''next meeting. If the .fight goes the distance, Uren"~is almost sflrc to win on points; but Shade is a clever and dangerous opponent, and carries a sleep producer 1 in cither hand. RUTHERFORD JtsEATS WITHEY At Stratford last Thursday, Ruther- * ford (Sydney) 9.10, gained a points decision over Withey (Dunedin) 10.8, in a fifteen round bout for a purse of £150. Withy was the agre.ssor in most of the rounds, but Rutherford's superior ringcraft enabled him to outgeneral his opponent. Mr T. Tracey was referee arid the decision was well received. Critics express themselves surprised at Withey's good .showing as he displayed a much better knowledge of the game than in his match, with Harry Holmes in Dunedin in September.
