SCHOONER LILY. NAUTICAL INQUIRY.* INTO STRANDING AT KAPITI. [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, November 29. An inquiry into the stranding of the auxiliary schooner Lily at Kapiti Island on the night of Novcinber 2, was opened to-day by Mr Riddcll, S.M., and Captains G. G. G. Smith and W. Rogers, nautical assessors. The Lily was a schooner of 84 tons gross, owned by Messrs J. and D. Campbell, of Wellington, and was fitted With a 30 h.p, oil engine. She was chartered by the. Government to carry timber from Greymouth to Wellington in "connection Avith its( housing scheme, and AA r as making h.er first voyage to tbeWest Coast when she got stranded. : j Captain Alfred E. H. Purvis, master, j gave evidence that he endeavoured, oaving to the heavy wind and sea, to get tho vessel inside Kapiti. The effort to put the vessel about failed, and she struck the land, the weather then being very thick. Evidence was ' given by two local fishermen as to the peculiarity of the tides in the 'vicinity of Kapiti when the vessel struck, Which, would account for her not answering- her helm.
