NGAKAWAU NOTES

1 (On*- own Correspondent). The Avcather conditions still rcmaii v ery bad, Avith rain and Avind coming from all quarters, and no signs of i change. People in these *parts con sider they were very fortunate in getting two fine days, Friday and, Satur day last for the Band Contest, Avhich took place on those days. A grand ball took place on Friday night in McNarn's Hall under the auspices of the Football and Hockey Clubs. Everything went off swimimngly; the music Avas supplied by Croy's Orchestra. The majority of the visiting bandsmen attended, Avhich helped to swell the crowd, and the result should be a good substantial sum. The Westport Garrison Band must be complimented on the fine performance put up by them and their soloists. It was rathcT hard luck for the Runanga Band, travelling so far and -getting so little, but better luck next time. It is announced that the great Male Voice Choir are booked to give a concert in Westport about the end of January, 1921, for the benefit of Mrs Parry, the concert has I am told, been sanctioned by the Westport Borough Council and should be Avell Avorth hearing by all lovers of music, and seeing that it Avill be for a good cause everybody should roll up and help make it a great success. It is reported that • the prohibitionists of these parts are greatly delighted owing to the fact that they were able to get Granity and Ngakaw.-u: proclaimed bone-dry druing the Granity Band Contest. Amongst the visitors to these partdruing the Aveck-end I noticed Mr Donohua, of Westport ("Tiny"), Mr' J. O'Brien, manager "Grey River j Argus," the latter being on a business visit in connection Avith the paper. I I am told that avc arc to get a visit J an or about Sunday, December 5, from Mr H. E. Holland, member for the Buller, it is his intention, weather permitting, to speak at three meetings Millerton, Stockton, and Ngakawau, if possible, in the one day, Avhen he A\i!i give a report of work done during the I I last session, and explain the Labour Party's action in connection Avith the same. It is hoped that the residents of this and surrounding districts will i roll up and give him a good audij eiife. Mr J. Rodgcrs, of Hector, and agent for the "Argus" has departed from this little spot and is now domiciled at Granity, where he has purchased some property. The- genial Jim deserves all the luck he can get. Mr J. Hill has taken over the agency for the paper aud hopes by strict attention to the delivery of the papers to be able to not only keep up the regularity of delivery but to also increase the number of subscribers. It is reported that imitation cards haA'e been issued in connection with the Avedding of a young couple who are getting married on December 29. Ih promises to be a grand affair.
