GREY SCHOOL COMMITTEE

MONTHLY MEETING.

The monthly meeting of the Grey School Committee was held last evening, there being- present; The Chairman (Mr W. Parfitt) aud Messrs R. J. \v ii; jams, C. Orams, L. Aldridge } and hto Secretary, Mr J. Blair.

The Rector's report on the Greymouth D.H.S. stated that '-be average attendance was as follows: Secondary Department, 79 out of 80; Primary, 474 out. of 529, Blakctown, 85 out of 95. A system' of prefects had been instituted at the school and several pupils had been appointed. He would like each of those to wear a small badge on hat or cap. The Rector's wish was acceded to.

A letter was received from the Canterbury Education Board, stating^ that it had no funds available for increasing the incidental allowances for school committees. These were fixed by the Government. This letter was consequent upoiY an application for an incrense of the caretaker's salary.

Mr Tennent agreed that £i 79 a year would not go very far these days. He moved, that the salary be increased by 30s. a month.

After some further discussion the motion was carried.

Tlio Canterbury Education Board .wrote, stating that it had forwarded school books to the committee, thus enabling the children to secure them at a reduced cost. Satisfaction was expressed at the action of the Board-

The Greymoutli Borough Council wrote, asking if the committee, would be prepared to cater for vHting school children on May 13th. The Government was. prepared to bear 4he cost.

The chairman stated that about 3000 children would be present.

Mr Tennent moved that the committee take on the request of the Prince of, Wales. Reception Committee to arrange in connection with visiting children. — Carried.

The Canterbury Education Board informed the Committee' that the gorse on the Blaketown SchooL. grounds had been grubbed and burned, and asking that the committee see that the grounds in future are cleared, as the Board could not underage it. — Reed.

The Visiting, Committee^ report* presented by Messrs. Williams and Tennent, stated that the urinal drains were defective and that moulding was required for maps.? At Blaketown School asphalt was needed for drill purposes. Some new seats were needed- also a new flag halyard. — Adopted.

The Chairman explained that the report was to have come before the Borough Council meeting last week, but the Engineer still had it.
