AMERICA REDUCING POSTAGE RATE.
WELLINGTON. June 5 The Acting Postmaster-General has received ' advice that the rate of post, age on letters from the United States for New Zealand will be reduced from July Ist from 3 to 2 cents per ounce. £4Q,000 ASKED FOR. TO. EXTEND OTAGO UNIVERSITY. DUNEDIN, June 5.. A deputation from the University Council flaked the Hon. J. A. Hanan, for a grant of £40,-000. for extensions to meet the wants of students, principally medical, the accomfhodation being q.vercnnydcd. La> i; t year thcTc were 640 students', and this year will start with 900. ' The Minister was sympatheticj but asked if it was possible to cut the amount down. The Chancellor replied that all the charges were absolutely essential to meet the needs of students now here. The Minister said that he would get a. report from the Bdrector-.General." He could not see that the position called for immediate action. The money at the disposal of the Education Department did not meet all the requirements In this, case he did not want to hang the matter up and would like to do something immediately.
