SEMES" OF FRENCH SUCCESSES

AT VARIOUS POINTS. t . (Rec. October 6, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, October 5. .. A French report states : North of St. Quentin we actively participated in the hard battle in the Hindenburg position. We have there captured Chardounert, south of Sequehart, as well as several fortified woods. Further south we have gained a footing at Lesdines. We have captured Morcourt. .Here t!RT enemy - furiously and repeatedly counter-attacked. All his efforts were shattered with heavy loss. We also .captured prisoners and f cur heavy guns. The Franco-Americans in the Champagne have gained an important advantage, and completed yesterday's successes on the left. We have pushed over four kil6metres north of Auberiver and eight kilometres north-west of Sommepy to the river Arne. T n this region we have captured' the villages of" Vaudeseucourt, Doutr.len, ;».nd St Souplet, and the Grand Bellois vvoods. Despite resistance, further cast we reached the outskirts of St Ettienne a Arnes and gained a footing on the plateau of Arfeuil, capturing Orfeuil village. • . ■■■ We evacuated Challerange, which neither side holds. It is being: intensely shelled by both artilleries. Favourable weather has facilitated our aviation. On Thursday nineteen enemy aeroplanes were felled by us, and three Tiaffoons were set on ,fire. Our scouts pushed far into the 'enemy lines. Fifty-one tons of bombs were dropped on' enemy reserves when massed with a view to a counter-at-tack in one sector. Our aeroplanes again fed our advanced troops. Five tons of food and cartridges were -thus supplied.'Twentynine tons of projectiles were dropped at night on enemy bivouacs and cantonments on a wide front.
