DOGGED AUSTRALIAN ADVANCE
ENEMY RESISTING TO UTMOST. (Rec. October 0, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, October 5 Writing on t\ic Australian advance beyond the Cambrai i Sf. Quentrn Canal, Mr Philip Gibbs says: The enemy is now fighting hard for the Beaurevoir line, which the Australlians have broken south and southwest of Beaurevoir village. The Australians are working forward with the aid of tanks, which the bad ground and the water are handicapping. Tho enemy have pillbox fortresses eastward 'of Estrees, from which there came a slashing machine-gun fire, that cheeked the Australians for six hours, until, by dogged efforts, they -overpowered the enemy, i Before tli'e Australians had gained tho enemy concrete shelters the enemy shelled them with gas shells; but the Australians, wearing gas masks, diU not retire on that account, but went on and managed to get. eastward of Wiancourt and westward of Beauevoir. They held their ground all night long white a counter blow was forcing the English to withdraw from Monti Brchain. The enemy 'occupied higher ground than the Anglo- Australians and were able to get an enfilade, first from one position and then from another, thus making Mont Brehain untenable. The German resistance on our left stiffened, keeping us in cheek, but the delay cannot last long, because the enfcniy are in desperate straits for reserves, and there is no line ahead of us which our nien : cannot break.
