CAMBRAI A STORM CENTRE
a clever Defence
(Rec. October 5,. 4.5 p.m.) LUivDuN, October 4.
Mr Philip Gibbs writes: Despite the German withdrawal further r».rth, tiie real storni centre is still Cambrui. Tnere the Germans remain within the girdle of the British line. The Canadians, to the northward, did not Jittack this (Friday) morning, but held to their gains.
The enemy has organised a utrong machine-gun defence in Cambrai. It is conducted under a commander who knows his job. He has posted gunners on the roofs of the houses with . a clear field for firing.
Apart, however, from these machinegunners there are few other Germans left in the town. After disgraceful orgies, .looting had occurred, in which officers joined, Cambrai was put jut of bounds for all the enemy troops except the garrison.
