BELGIANS ADVANCING
(Rec Uctober 6, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON. October 5. A Belgian communique reports: The Franco-Belgians to-day slightly progressed towards Bombooglede and Roulers. A n Anglo-Belgian-French attack on September 28th conquered the whole Flanders ridge i«i "forty-eight hours. Local actions since, aimed at freeing approaches in *he ridge, resulted in an advance of fourteen kilometres, on a front of forty. This completely frees Ypres, and has permitted the occupation of the Lys river between Armentieres^and Werdioq. Ten thousand five hundred prisoners, including two hundred officers h»ve been counted; also 350 guns, tWG hundred trench mortars, and six hundred maciufte-guns. British airmen powerfully contributed to the victory. Sir Douglas Haig, in a supplementary report, stai'es that in the .ipciations by the Second Brititeh Army in Flanders, last Saturday and on subsequent clays, the Ninth, Twenty Ninth, and Thirty Fifth Divisions rendered dfsi'ingufshed service in most unfavourable weather. They advanced to a depth of over nine miles, across difficult country, clearing the whole range. east and south-east of Ypres, and taking a prominent part in the i- capture" by the British troops of over four thousand prisoners a«d one hundred puns. The Ninth Division, on the first day of attack took -Decelaere, five miles eastward of its startiing pout, and three days layer reached Ledoghem. On the first day the Twenty-Ninth iMviison passed beyond Cheluvelt, and captiired Kruiscq^kc, havfiig advanced five miiles along the Metiin Road. On its right the Thirty-Fifth Division also passed far beyond our old pos/tiions of 1917, and took "Zandvoorde.
