From Westland Patriotic Association, enclosing cheque for ' £4, refund, ai amount advanced by this Association to a returned soldier from Hokitika.*— Received. - '
Circular letter from Department of Intenral Affairs, re persons authorised to issue permits to solict or receive
contributions, or to raise money for a war fund. — Received.
From pJScef in change, War Expena* es Department, Wellington, re claim of a soldiers mother for separation al- •■ lowance, arid stating that one of tho conditions imposed is, that applicant must not be, in receipt of an income apart from allotment; of more than .los per week, and regretting, that, as applicant was in receipt of a n income above . this sum, the application could not be entertained. Mr McKay considered the War Expenses Department* was not treating the woman fairly. He moved that this Society make at grant of 7s per weeß, to assist her in paying the rent. ■'. Mr McLean seconded. The motion was' carried unanimously.
• From Secretary; War Relief Association, Wellington, re claim made by the father of two soldiers, and to whom they had paid the sum of £4 12s 6d, stating that as the responsibility rest-«^ ed jointly with this Association and ' the Christchurch Patriotic Fund, they asked . whether this Society is prepared to reimbure them fbr v one half of the amount (£2 6s 3d). The Secretary explained the soldier , did not belong to this district, and. consequently this Association is not responsible. Moved by Mr Kettle, and seconded by Mr. McKay, that application be decLned. — Carried.
From Secretary of a country Patriotic Committee, enclosing application -j for assistance for returned soldier, his i wife and family, and recommending ! this Society to apply to the Pensions , board' for assistance. Mr lUoJiay moved that it be left in the hands of the Chairman to deal with, and that he be empowered to grant up ; to £1 per -week, pending further enj quiries. Seconded by Air Kettle and carriedv j From Clerk, Grey- County Council, !, re: the recent appointment of a roadI man, stating that' the" man left the <. Council's employ to go to 1 camp, but . j was rejected as medically unfit. He | had been previously in the Council's ii employ and proved himself a thoroughj ly capable and conscientious workman, i and when a vacancy occurred, the Council did not hesitate' to engage him.: — Received. Mr Kettjle considered that the facts discjosed, justified the Council in their action. The Mayor was of the same opinion.
