A STRIKING DISPLAY
(Per Press Association.)
SYDNEY, September 16
The ' "Daily Telegraph" says;— JvUioaining's performance on Saturday was one of tlie most striking displays of galloping ever seen at itandwiclc. .tie hehaved somewhat unkindly afc the post and lost some lengths by bSpping nall'-way round, but from that point ,he settled down to work. The New Zealander had assumed control before reaching the borne turn, and once in the straight be left the others as it they were standing. It was a remarkable . performance, especially as Gloaming had never previously started in a race." Continuing, the 1 "Telegraph" adds: None are more pleased at the form shown by Gloaming than the handicapper, Mr Daly. Ho called on Gloaming to concede weight in the Novice Handicap to a number of horses who had some form, and Mr Greenwood's representative '• was promptly scratched. Mr Daly took the view that if he was wrong in estimating Gloaming's ability, it was better to spoil his chances in fhe Novice Handicap than weight him in a way that would quite spoil the race if his estimate of this galloper proved correct. The writer speaks favourably of Gloaming's Derby expectations, and adds that apparently Gloaming had not given any evidence of remarkable galloping powers before the entries closed for the Epsom, Metropolitan or two Cups, otherwise he might have got into one or more of these races in a way that would have been a nightmare to weight adjusters.
