SENSATIONAL ARRESTS,
THE AUCKLAND BURGLARIES
(Per . Press Association.) AUCKLAND, September 16. The arrest of two men farmed, believed to be connected with numerous burglaries in the city and suburbs during the last four weeks, was effected at a house in Wellesley Street early yesterday morning by Detective Cummings and Plain Clothes Constable McHugh. The me n were both young have been residents in Auckland for some time. One of them, James Daven was a regular .boarder at the house. The other, John McLelland, had only slept there on Saturday night. The officers having made sure of their ground entered the bedroom where the men were sleeping and overpowered and handcuffed them before they, Had a chance to offer resistance. A search revealed a loaded revolver under Deven's pillow and several plugs of gelignite under his bed. There was a loaded revolver lying on the pillow alongside McLellan's head. A further quantity of gelignite wns found under MnLelland's mattress. Several round? of ammunition for each of £he revolvers were also discovered. Thfi men were taken to the police station on a formal charge. Another voune: man Chf>rie« McCormack, believed to be implicated in breaking and entering in Queen Street was arrested about mid-nl^ht nenr his Home at Grey Lynn. The police were making enouiry at tiie man's home when they 'heard him approaching, and were able to secure him without much trouble. , LATER: Three burglaries occurred on Saturday night. One was at Oldbury's ginsmith shop, Queen .Street, , where six revolvers and ammunition, valued at £12. were "stolen. At the Government Oyster Depot the eaat-iron safe was wrecked by explosives and the cash contents, of 445, stolen. At New Lynn Post Office, the third burglary occurred. A safe was blown open by gelignite and the contents (£56 19s) in postal notes, and £22" in cash were stolen. A fourth suspect, Patrick Gunn, aged twenty-two, was arrested early this morning on a charge of being concerned in the New Lynn burglary. James Deven (20) and Edward James MeLellan (21) came before Mr Cut-ten, S.M., to-day on charges of having broken and entered' W. Jii ; Hutchison's, the New Zealand Bacon Company's and the Electrical 'Construction Company's premises. : They were remanded for eight days.
