EMPIRE DAY.
There was a iaiv attendance at the Town Hall on Wednesday evening at the Empire Day. celebrations. Mr. i>. J.., Evans, President, and Mr. L. V. de t Berry, vice-I'esident of the Overseas Club spoke. Tlie proceedings opened with the * singing of three verses of the National Anthem. Mr. De Berry delivered a most fitting address on Empire Day on the feelings every true Britisher should have on such a day, and last on the manner in which we should act and keep acting until a glorious and honourable peace was arrived at. j>lr. W. J. Butler then read a very fine speech on National Sificieucy, in which he laid down plans for the average Britisher to work. A copy ot his speech will be published in the local papers. In the absence of Mr. J. A. Valentine, Air. D. J. Evans undertook tlie judging of the juvenile reciting competition. The peace set was rather a difficult one — Kipling's "Recessional.'' Result: Eva Dawson Ist, Basil Gibbons 2nd, and Jack Reid 3rd. Only a very small margin separated Ist and 2na. Vocal items, each calling for an encore were given by Mrs Brook, Sfsses F. Stapleton, and E. Perry.. The accompanists of the evening were Mrs "Doctor and Mjsses Davies and Daly. A collection was taken up to help the Overseas Tobacco jj'und.j
