HAIG'S LATEST REPORT.
SUCCESSFUL RAIDS MADE. GREAT AERIAL ACTIVITY. Australian and N. Z. Caul© Aaun., and iieuter. (Rec. Slay 19, 5.5 p.m.) EONDON, May 18. Sir Douglas Haig reports: "YVe took a tew prisoners in a successful raid in the neighbourhood of Beaumont-Hamel. We rushed a post northward of Merris. The garrison being killed or arisen out; . , There was great aerial activity on ' Thursday. Our aeroplnaes dropped ; twenty-three tons -of bombs on import- ', ant rail centres, aerodromes sTricT bill- ■ j ets. The fighting was intense early ■ 1 in the morning and evening. We brought down thirty and drove down five, while our anti-aircraft guns brought down two others. IVy hostile machines landed in our lines, the occupants being captured. Five British machines are missing. Our night fliers dropped a further 10$ tons of bombs on 'rail stations' at Lille, Douai, Chaulnes and billets in the neighbourhood of Bapaume. Peronne, Posieres and the dod£s at Brugges. The enemy's night fliers were also active. A Gotha landed behind our lines. The crew were taken prisoner. In reference to the Saarbrucken mid on the 16th. three hostile machines were driven down not five.
