MINING

+. WESTLAND DEVELOPMENTS. Mining prospects in Westljuul aTe brightening, judging by reports in the "Guardian." The Westland Gold Prospecting Syndicate Limited of which Mr. D. Ziman is an important director, has been carrying out some important prospecting operations. In the Arahura Valley the prospecting has been by boring, the Government Keystone machine . being operated, under the supervision of Mr. G. A. Scale, the officer in charge^ The results in that locality have been so satisfactory, that freehold areas have been acquired at substantial figures. The prospecting is being continued and. is still very encouraging. On behalf of the Syndicate, Mr. Ziman has purchased recently the Worksop No. 2 dre.dge one of the best dredges procurable south of the line at the present time. Another important step of the Syndicate is to procure the services of Mr. B. O. Speed, at present in charge of the Success' Dredge,- as dredgdmaster. The soil is. first removed, and saved and ( after .dredging the gold bearing strata, .the soil is spread over the levelled surface of the tailings, thus bringing, the worked ground into use for pastoral; purposes. In addition to the • prospecting carried qn r in the Arahura Valley by boring, a party of nien has been engaged .for some time under Mr. J. Bassett for the Westland Syndicate, prospecting in the Kanieri Forks to Lake Kariieri district. These operations have been confined to shafting and driving, and a large amount of coimtry has been covered with varying' success. A shaft: was put- down on a sideling, and .a narrow row strata of wash dirt was. passed through before reaching, the bottom. After bottoming the shaft the- party went back to the run of gold: and drove into the terrace. The lead thickened out to four feet in depth and gave prospects equal to two pennyweights to the load. It is a good 'sample, of gold and the surrounding conditions are favourable for goldcarrying country. . _j _
