THE BIG BATTLE COMMENCING.
ENEMY ACTIVITY EVERYWHERE BRITISH PRISONERS AND TRENCHES TAKEN. (Rec. March 3, 5.20 p.m.) LONDON, March 2. Marshal Haig reports successful raids southward of Armentieres and the neighbourhood of Arleux Engohelle. ' Two enemy night raids entered the ' British trenches and captured a tew prisoners. I In a third raid all the raiders were killed or captured. After heavy bombardment on a wide front northward of Neuve Chapelle, | n strong party attacked and entered the Portuguese front trenches and were immediately ejected, and the position restored. The British repulsed raids on the Ypres-Comines Canal and southward of Houtboulst forest.
