John -Barriett, aged 73, a well-known' farmer of Leeston, Canterbury, had walked , to service- but soon after he took his seat 'he suddenly expired. He had suffered from heart trouble but recently had 'been in good health. He was visiting the district with his wife! ' His son Dr. Barnett. of Palmerston, is on active service. KILLED BY A TREE. NEW PLYMOUTH September 3 After meeting with many delays and difficulties the v directors of the New Zealand Iron Ore Smelting Co. are now confident of success. During the last eighteen hours the furnaces have been tapped seven times arid conditions were found to be improving all the time, assuring a continuity which has hitherto never been secured. . HOTEL. AND STORE DAMAGED. GISBORNE, September 3. The Wae'rengahika Hotel and Colebrook's Store were destroyed by fire on Saturday night. About £50° worth of stock , from the store was saved. •
