WEST FRONT -

WEARING DOWN THE ENEMY. GENERAL MAURICE INTERVIEWED. LYING STATEMENTS REFUTED. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Rec. August 31, 5.55 p.m.) LONDON, August 30. Genera] Maurice, interviewed, said that there were no developments on the British front but the process,, of wearing down the enemy continues. The bombardment ■ and infantry actions are . proceeding: with greater success than is generally imagined. The Germans, engaged in the battles round Ypres since July 31st, have used twice as .many divisions as the British and have withdrawn from the fighting a shade less than twice as many as the British. The exhaustion of the enemy's reserve is the great test and the progress of General von Mackensen's attack failed owing to the Roumanians' gallant resistance and khe Austrian withdrawals to strengthen the Italian front lines. General Maurice said that he had received many letters stating that the British were getting the colonials tp fight for them. This idea was current in America and especially in Spain.. "This is a downright lie" he declared, "and part of the German propaganda. At the present the British troops in France number six. to. one compared with the overseas forces and their ' casualties throughout the war show "exactly the same figures. The casualties at Ypres since July 31st have been almost exactly nine, to one." WET WEATHER CONTINUES ENEM-Y ARTILLERY ACTIVE Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.LONDON; August 30.
